Oil Painting Basics
There are a variety of portrait styles that allow an artist to best portray not just the physical aspects of a subject, but the inner beauty as well. Like many portrait styles, an oil painting portrait isn’t limited to a single correct method for creating a realistic likeness out of oil. There are multiple techniques and approaches that can be taken, which require at least a basic knowledge of working with oil and an understanding of lighting, shadows, and proportions and how to portray them correctly. Although live subjects are preferable, it is possible to just send a photograph that the artist can render onto the canvass. Artists that are skilled in their trade can gauge proper angles and features from a photograph, and translate them onto the new medium. One of the most challenging aspects of art is creating a realistic skin tone that replicates that of the subject being painted.
